After 2 overnights in Castletown Bere, Lady Belle departed for Knights Town on Valentia Island, 40 nm. The sun shone nicely as LB left Bantry Bay but not before a downpour of hailstones in Piper’s Sound. The wind was blowing W/SW and conditions were reasonable going through Dursey Sound.
Crossing Kenmare Bay there was a discussion on whether to stop at Derrynane but with a northerly forecast for the following days we pressed on towards Valentia Island in rolly seas. Views of the Skelligs to port, great coastal cliffs to starboard and some fin whales were a treat. Dolphins appeared on the bow daily.
Passing the Sound to Portmagee, the sail along the island’s north coast was much better as the seas calmed.
